Sound Detectives: Sounds & Rhymes
Sound Detectives is an 18-page phonics workbook for ages 4 to 6 that works on hearing sounds in words, the listening skill that comes right before reading.
It opens with five beginning-sounds pages that move through the alphabet a few letters at a time. Your child says the name of each picture, listens to the first sound and circles or matches the right letter. Four rhyme-matching pages follow, pairing words like cat and hat, bee and tree, fox and box, snake and cake, and mouse and house.
Next are letter hunts for B, M, S and T, some of the most common starting sounds, and two pages of first CVC words. On those, children say a simple word slowly and write one sound in each box, which is their first taste of spelling by sound.
The book finishes with a certificate. Use it as a beginning sounds worksheets pack before a full phonics program, or alongside one. It comes as a printable PDF in black-and-white for US Letter or A4.
