34 Fall Activities for Preschoolers (and What Each One Teaches)

September 28, 2026 · 7 min read · By the Built Brains team

The best fall activities for preschoolers use what the season hands you for free: leaves to sort and rub, apples to count and taste, pumpkins to measure and scoop, and cool mornings for nature walks. Below are 34 ideas grouped by type, each with the skill it builds, so you can plan a whole autumn of learning with very little prep.

Outdoor fall activities and nature walks

Fall is the easiest season to get preschoolers outside. The weather is mild, there are no bugs biting, and the ground is covered in things to collect.

  1. Leaf scavenger hunt. Look for a red leaf, a yellow leaf, a tiny leaf, a huge leaf and a leaf with holes. Builds: color words, size vocabulary, observation.
  2. Leaf pile jumping. Rake a pile together, then jump. Count the jumps. Builds: gross motor skills, counting.
  3. Acorn and pinecone collecting. Fill a bag, then sort the finds at home. Builds: sorting, classifying.
  4. Tree hug and bark rubbing. Lay paper on bark and rub with the side of a crayon. Compare two trees. Builds: comparing textures, fine motor control.
  5. Squirrel watch. Sit still for three minutes and see what a squirrel is doing. Talk about why animals gather food. Builds: patience, early science.
  6. Sound walk. Stop and name every sound: crunching leaves, geese, wind. Builds: listening, the auditory skills that come before reading.

Back home, ask your child to draw one thing they found. Even a scribbled leaf with a dictated caption turns a walk into a record they can keep.

Leaf crafts for preschoolers

  1. Leaf rubbings. Place leaves vein side up under thin paper and rub with peeled crayons. Builds: hand strength, noticing patterns.
  2. Leaf collage. Glue real or paper leaves onto a tree trunk your child draws. Builds: gluing, scissor practice, planning.
  3. Leaf animals. Turn leaves into a fox, an owl or a hedgehog by adding googly eyes and marker details. Builds: imagination, fine motor skills.
  4. Leaf suncatcher. Press leaves between two sheets of clear contact paper and hang in a window. Builds: pressing and smoothing, which strengthens small hand muscles.
  5. Leaf painting. Paint one side of a leaf and press it onto paper for a print. Builds: cause and effect, color mixing.

Ages note: 3 year olds do best with big leaves and glue sticks. By 4 and 5, most can cut their own leaf shapes along a thick line.

Apple and pumpkin activities for preschool

Apples and pumpkins are perfect preschool science: they are real, they fit in small hands (well, some pumpkins), and children can watch them change.

Apple ideas

  1. Apple taste test. Try red, green and yellow apples, then make a simple chart of favorites. Builds: graphing, describing words like sweet, sour, crunchy.
  2. Cut an apple sideways to find the star of seeds inside. Count the seeds. Builds: counting, curiosity.
  3. Apple life cycle. Talk through seed, tree, blossom and apple, and put pictures in order. The Apple Life Cycle Explorer Kit has read-aloud facts, a life-cycle wheel and cut-and-paste sequencing. Builds: sequencing, science vocabulary.
  4. Apple stamping. Halve an apple, dip it in paint and print. Builds: patterns (red, green, red, green).

Pumpkin ideas

  1. Pumpkin investigation. Measure around a pumpkin with yarn, guess whether it sinks or floats, then test it in the tub. Builds: prediction, measuring.
  2. Scoop and count seeds. Scoop the insides, then count seeds into groups of ten. Builds: counting, one-to-one correspondence, sensory tolerance.
  3. Pumpkin life cycle. From seed to sprout to vine to pumpkin. The Pumpkin Life Cycle Explorer Kit covers each step with a wheel to label and a coloring page. Builds: sequencing, science words.
  4. Pumpkin washing station. Small pumpkins, a tub of water, brushes and towels. Builds: independence, fine motor skills.

For a full themed week, the Pumpkin Patch Learning Pack has how a pumpkin grows, counting and adding with pumpkins, pumpkin words to read and write, and coloring pages. The Apple Picking Learning Pack does the same for apple season with counting, adding and taking away, and orchard words to trace and read.

Fall math: counting and sorting activities

  1. Acorn counting cups. Write 1 to 10 on paper cups and fill each with the right number of acorns. Builds: number recognition, counting.
  2. Leaf sorting. Sort leaves by color, then by size, then by shape. Ask your child to invent a new rule. Builds: classifying, flexible thinking.
  3. Biggest to smallest. Line up five pinecones or gourds by size. Builds: seriation, comparing.
  4. Fall patterns. Leaf, acorn, leaf, acorn. What comes next? Builds: patterning, an early algebra skill.

Ages note: 3 year olds can usually count and touch up to 5 or 10 objects. Many 4 and 5 year olds are ready to count to 20 and try simple adding with real objects.

Fall sensory bins and sensory play

Sensory bins keep preschoolers busy for a long time and are great for vocabulary: crunchy, smooth, bumpy, prickly.

  1. Dry corn or bean bin with scoops, cups and small pumpkins hidden inside. Builds: pouring, scooping, hand-eye coordination.
  2. Leaf and pinecone bin with tongs to pick things up. Builds: pincer grip, which helps with holding a pencil later.
  3. Pumpkin pie play dough. Add cinnamon and a little pumpkin spice to homemade dough. Builds: hand strength, describing smells.
  4. Mystery bag. Hide an acorn, a leaf, a mini gourd and a pinecone in a bag. Guess by touch. Builds: vocabulary, the sense of touch.

Always supervise sensory play with small items. Dry beans, corn kernels and acorns can be choking hazards for young children who still put things in their mouths.

Tongs, scoops and droppers in any of these bins quietly build the small hand muscles your child will later use to hold a pencil.

Fall books and printables for preschoolers

Some days are rainy, a sibling is napping, or you just need 20 quiet minutes. That is where a stack of fall picture books and a few printables earn their place.

  1. Library basket. Borrow picture books about leaves, apples, pumpkins, squirrels and migrating birds, and keep them in a basket by the couch. Builds: vocabulary, love of books.
  2. Fall busy book. The Cozy Autumn Busy Book has a squirrel’s leaf pile to color, fall words to trace, acorns to count, a find-the-shadow page and a hedgehog maze. Builds: pencil control, counting, visual discrimination.
  3. Tell a fall story. Your child dictates, you write, they illustrate. Builds: storytelling, the link between spoken and written words.
  4. Pumpkin stand pretend play. Set up a pretend pumpkin stand with signs and price tags. Builds: social skills, early money talk, print awareness.

Busy books are also a lifesaver for rest time. Keep one in a special basket that only comes out at quiet time so it stays exciting.

Fall cooking activities with preschoolers

Cooking is secretly a math, science and reading lesson. Preschoolers can do more than you think with a sturdy stool and close supervision.

  1. Applesauce. Your child can wash apples and stir (you handle peeling, chopping and the stove). Builds: following steps, watching how heat changes food.
  2. Roasted pumpkin seeds. Rinse, pat dry and sprinkle with salt before an adult roasts them. Builds: measuring, patience.
  3. Pumpkin muffins. Let your child count scoops of flour and crack an egg into a bowl. Builds: counting, measuring, fine motor skills.

How to plan a week of fall activities

You do not need to do all 34. Pick one theme a week and choose three or four activities from different groups above:

  • Week 1, leaves: leaf hunt, leaf rubbings, leaf sorting, leaf bin.
  • Week 2, apples: taste test graph, apple star, applesauce, apple life cycle.
  • Week 3, pumpkins: pumpkin investigation, seed counting, pumpkin washing, pumpkin muffins.
  • Week 4, animals getting ready for winter: squirrel watch, acorn counting cups, a library basket about hibernation.

Want everything for September to November in one download? The Fall Bundle includes three busy books, two seasonal packs, two math and literacy packs, the Halloween coloring book and the pumpkin life cycle.

Questions parents ask

Popular fall preschool themes include leaves and trees, apples, pumpkins, animals getting ready for winter, harvest and farms, weather changes and Thanksgiving. Spend about a week on each so children can revisit the same words and ideas through crafts, counting, books, sensory play and cooking. Repetition is how preschoolers learn best.

Start with what they can see and touch. Go outside to notice leaves changing color, collect acorns and feel the cooler air. Then bring those finds inside to sort, count, paint and talk about. Add picture books and simple science, like an apple or pumpkin life cycle, to explain why things change.

Three year olds love jumping in leaf piles, collecting pinecones, washing small pumpkins, scooping in a dry corn bin, stamping with apple halves and making leaf rubbings with big crayons. Keep activities short, hands-on and messy-friendly. Count up to five together, name colors, and let them carry the collecting bag on walks.

They can be, with supervision. Dry beans, corn, acorns and small gourds are choking hazards for children who still mouth objects, so stay close and choose larger items for younger children. Set up the bin on a tray or old sheet, show how to scoop and pour, and put it away when play turns into throwing.
