How to use these I spy printables

Each page takes 10 to 15 minutes. Use one a day, or keep a few together for a quiet afternoon or a long car ride.

  1. Look at the whole picture first. Ask your child what they notice before they start hunting.
  2. Pick one item at a time. Point to the first item in the key and find all of them before moving to the next.
  3. Mark as you go. Lightly color or circle each item found so nothing is counted twice.
  4. Count and write. Count the marked items and write or say the total.
  5. Save the shadow and odd-one-out pages. Use them on different days for variety.

You need a crayon or colored pencils. A highlighter is great for marking found items. These pages work well as part of a quiet time routine; our guide to quiet time activities for preschoolers explains how to set one up.

Tips by age

Age 4. Hunt together at first. You say "I spy a cow," your child finds it. Count out loud together, touching each one. On the shadow page, talk about the outline: "Which shadow has long ears?"

Age 5. Let your child hunt alone and write the totals. On the "which one is different?" page, ask them to explain what's different: a missing spot, a different color, a hat.

Age 6. Add a challenge. Ask which item has the most and which has the fewest, or how many animals there are altogether. Ask your child to make up their own I spy question for you.

Games to play with the pages

  • Timed hunt. Set a sand timer and see how many items your child can find before it runs out. Then try to beat it.
  • Story spy. Pick three items from the ocean page and make up a short story that includes all three.
  • Real-life I spy. After the space page, play I spy around the room using colors or beginning sounds.
  • Shadow theater. Shine a flashlight on toys to make shadows on the wall and guess the toy.
  • Spot the change. Put five toys in a row, have your child close their eyes, swap one and ask what changed.

The pages also slide nicely into a homemade quiet book; see our busy book ideas for how to put one together.

When your child is ready for more

Once these feel easy, look for busier pictures with more items, matching shadows that look very similar, and odd-one-out rows where the difference is small. These small steps keep the challenge just right and build careful looking.

The full I Spy & Look-and-Find Book has 24 activity pages across six themes: farm, ocean, space, dinosaurs, bugs and toys. There are 8 I spy counting pages, 8 find-the-shadow pages and 8 which-one-is-different pages, with a certificate of completion at the end.

Questions parents ask

They are designed for ages 4 to 6. Four year olds can find and point to each item and count with help. Five and six year olds can usually count and write the totals on their own. Younger 3 year olds can still enjoy finding pictures if you count together.

Yes. The 5 pages are free to download and print as many times as you like for home or class. There is no email sign-up. Choose Colourful or Black & White and US Letter or A4, and the PDF downloads instantly.

Look-and-find pages build visual attention, which is the ability to search a busy picture for one thing. They also practice counting, and the shadow and odd-one-out pages build visual discrimination, the same skill children use later to tell similar letters such as b and d apart.

Yes. I spy pages are calm and absorbing, and many children can do them alone once they understand the idea. Put a page, a crayon and a few counters in a quiet time box. Fifteen to twenty minutes of looking and counting is a good stretch for a 4 or 5 year old.

The full book has 27 pages: 8 I spy counting pages, 8 find-the-shadow matching pages and 8 which-one-is-different pages, across farm, ocean, space, dinosaur, bug and toy themes, plus a certificate of completion. The pages get a little harder as your child goes, so the challenge grows with them.
